Het blijft mij verbazen hoe jong vele rockmusici overlijden. Zeker in vergelijk met de Nederlandse verzekeringsstandaard, die voor mannen 85 jaar aanhoudt. Ik lees vrijwel nooit dat iemand deze leeftijd haalt en kennelijk musici helemaal al niet.

Gisteren kwam de man met de zeis bij John Wetton (67) voorbij; hij overleed aan darmkanker.  Hij was een icoon in de symfonische rockwereld. Zanger en bassist bij topbands als Family, King Crimson, Uriah Heep, UK, Wishbone Ash, Asia en Icon. Hij staat bovendien in de Snob 2000 met een duet met Anneke van Giersbergen: To Catch a Thief. Tevens was hij sessie-muzikant bij Yes, Renaissance, Roxy Music, Ayreon, Genesis en heeft hij samen gewerkt met Roger Chapman, Steve Hackett, Bryan Ferry en Brian Eno. En dan heeft hij ook ettelijke soloalbums uitgebracht. Stil zitten was geen optie voor dit multi-talent en deze liedjesschrijver, die pas bij Asia tot volle wasdom kwam.

One of the biggest steps, for a lyric writer, is to write in the first person, to actually take that step and say “I”, “this is how I feel”, “this is me”. It’s a really kind of dangerous territory because you are opening your emotions up to everyone to examine. So for me, all the way through the seventies, I would contribute lyrics to King Crimson, did the lyrics to UK, and very rarely did I use the word “I”. Because… along with a lot of English people, and writers, I have an inborn embarrassment about talking about myself. I had to overcome that. And the first time I really started to express emotions was with Asia, in 1982. In fact the first word of the first song is “I” : “I never meant to be so bad to you…”. It started to become autobiographical from then on.

Zijn meest succesvolle albums stammen uit de tijd van UK (Rendezvous 6:02) en Asia. Het debuutalbum van Asia haalde de 1ste plaats in de Billboard albumlijst en de opvolger werd een vette Top 10 hit.
