Het meest Ondergewaardeerde liedje aller tijden volgens Ian Siegal: Little Richard – Green Power (1971)

Ok, I’m gonna say Green Power by Little Richard. Released in 1971 it was from an album called King of Rock and Roll from his years on the Reprise label, which was not well received. Richard could not get ‘arrested’ at that time; he was unfashionable. The record was mostly covers of big hits by other artists, but very much Richard’s own take and all quite brilliant. His version of Hank Williams’ So Lonesome I Could Cry is breath-taking.

Green Power is a particular favourite of mine; I covered it for one thing, but boy was it a struggle! Written by the album producer H.B. Barnum, it’s a perfect vehicle for Richard’s incredible voice. His range is phenomenal. Add to that it’s one of the funkiest tracks you’ll ever hear. The time signature flip-around at the top is a mind-scrambler on it’s own! The whole album should really have put him back on the map, but he was associated by then with a genre too far in the past and no longer fashionable. The previous album The Rill Thing from 1970 almost broke-through, but not quite. A travesty in my opinion.

Whenever I hear this or any Little Richard song it takes me back to standing on the couch (my stage) wailing along to it with a spoon in my hand (my microphone) and annoying the neighbours. The funny thing was I’d insist on tying a tape-measure to the spoon because, well y’know, it needs a cable to plug it in to the PA system, right?

I’ll remove Neil Young’s Old Man purely on the basis that I don’t think it’s under-valued. I hate myself for doing it though!
